» CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character NAME: Florian Phineas Horatio Aldebrant, Esquire, commonly known as Finn
Canon & MEDIUM: Dragon Age: Origins - Witch Hunt
Canon PULL-POINT: Post Witch Hunt.
Character AGE: Unknown, but appears to be in his early twenties.
Character ABILITIES: As a mage from Thedas, Finn is capable of using powerful magic. However, this ability comes at a price; the constant possibility of one day being possessed by a demon and turning into an abomination means that not only is he locked away to protect the people of Thedas, he's also locked away to protect him from their prejudice.

Finn's a spirit healer, capable of persuading benevolent spirits of the Fade to lend their aid in battle. It's a respected calling within the Circle, but spirit healers are at a greater risk of being possessed, so they must maintain vigilance against their vices.

Magic skills aside, Finn is a linguist and history buff.

Character HISTORY: There is little known of Finn's history. It can be assumed that he was sent to the Circle at a young age and that he's passed his Harrowing, but everything else is open to speculation. His name does provide some hints; he includes "Esquire" in his name, remarking that his father insists upon using the title. Coupling this fact with the luxurious items that Finn's father had crafted at Denerim, it seems likely that the Aldebrants are very wealthy yet not nobility.

Most mages in Thedas have little to no contact with their parents. Mages are both feared and despised, so most children are taken away from their families and sent to the Circle at a young age, sometimes against their parents' will, and sometimes it's their parents themselves who cast their children away. To be a mage is to be flawed, because magic is what gave rise to the Tevinter Imperium and caused the Blights to ravage the land. It's unknown if Finn was taken by the Templars or sent by his family, but judging on his relationship with his parents it appears to be the latter. However, unlike most mages, Finn retains a close relationship with his parents. They often send him letters, care packages, and expensive items to celebrate his successes (such as the boots and gloves lined with expensive fox fur for surviving his Harrowing). Finn speaks fondly of his parents, even if he is exasperated by his mother's constant worrying and her questionable hobbies.

Finn is first introduced in Witch Hunt, the final DLC for Dragon Age: Origins. He approaches the Warden and Ariane in the library at the Circle, berating them for their rough handling of an ancient book on Elven artifacts. He ends up tagging along, proving to be useful with his knowledge of ancient languages and his Spirit Healing abilities. They eventually manage to locate the only working Eluvian in the area, and there they found Morrigan, the witch that Ariane and the Warden were searching for. The Warden confronts Morrigan, but in the end she leaves through the Eluvian and the Warden returns to her friends. This is the point from which Finn is pulled.

*This is the ending [personal profile] ladyspitfire chose, so I'm going along with it for continuity purposes.

Character PERSONALITY: One of Finn's most noticeable traits is his thirst for knowledge; as a linguist and student of history, he is willing to leave the comfort and security of Kinloch Hold in order to see firsthand an ancient Elven artifact. He wants to protect this knowledge, even if it means confronting someone who could easily hurt him (seen when Finn tries to rescue a priceless book from the Warden's mishandling).

At first glance Finn may come off as arrogant, since he considers himself the best linguist in the Circle as well as the most knowledgeable about Tevinter history; however, it is not so much arrogance as it is confidence. He's studied hard and considers the two subjects to be his greatest passions, so it's no wonder that he's become an expert. He's the best because he's pushed himself to be the best, and he feels that he has earned the right to be confident.

He's also very much aware that he's a bookworm and will remark that besides his book smarts he has little going for him. It may make him seem as if he's insecure, but he simply knows what his strengths and weaknesses are. He's not one to puff himself up and lie about what he's capable of.
